They were already undergoing training at the NYS college in Gilgil

Up to 5000 youths were selected during the nationwide National Youth Service recruitment exercise which took place during the month of December 2010.

When the recruits reported for training this year, it was discovered that about 218 of them were there illegally. They were recruited using fake documents which contained forged signatures.

It is alleged that the said recruits paid up to Shs 14 million in bribes to corrupt NYS officials as each parted with between 50 - 70k  to be recruited. They were then issued fake admission letters forged at Nairobi's Luthuli avenue.

The Kenya National Youth Service's mandate is to train the youth in technical & vocational skills in order to facilitate their engagement later in the national economy. NYS recruits also acquire paramilitary training and are sometimes absorbed into the police, paramilitary and defence forces.
